Charles is PALS Person of the Month

Posted Monday June 5, 2023

June is the ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter cat month and the Proud Animal Lovers Shelter has 16 kitties waiting to be adopted. We have kittens and adults, each with their unique personality. There are tortoiseshells, calicos and tabbys. We even have an American bobtail, who is longhaired and declawed. Our adoption fee for cats is $85, unless the cat has been at the shelter over six months. In that case, the fee is only $65. It covers the cat’s spay/ neuter, deworming and defl eaing, test for feline leukemia and feline AIDS and vaccinations.

PALS has 24 dogs waiting for their forever homes. They can be seen on the PALS Facebook page and on petfi nder. com. Their adoption fee is $150, unless they’ve been with us for over a year. The fee is then reduced to $100. It covers their spay/neuter, deworming and defl eaing, microchip, test for heartworms and vaccinations. They are on heartworm prevention.

In May, we took in 10 cats and adopted out fi ve. Nine dogs were taken in and 15 went to their forever families. PALS can always use volunteers and we’re thrilled when former volunteers want to come back and help us some more. Such is the case for Cortney Charles. We’re so happy that she’s rejoined our shelter family. We keep her busy on Mondays cleaning cat kennels, doing dishes and helping feed dogs. When she was asked why she likes PALS, Cortney said, “I enjoy working at PALS shelter because the dogs and the cats bring me joy and laughter. And I like working with the other people who care about the animals.” The PALS board has chosen to honor Cortney as its PALS Person of the Month. We are very thankful, Cortney, that you’re at PALS to take such good care of the animals.

PALS recently established a low-cost spay/neuter program to help low-income families get their dogs and cats spayed or neutered. Applications are available online or at PALS, Donna’s Pet Food Pantry, or Regional Veterinary Service. Completed applications should be returned to PALS. When approved, applicants will receive a voucher and pay $10. That’s the applicant’s total cost for the spay/neuter for each dog and/or cat. Dogs will also receive rabies and parvo vaccinations and a microchip, if needed. Cats will also receive a rabies vaccination, if needed. This only pertains to the animals that are approved for our spay/neuter program. Once the applicant receives the voucher, they are to call either Allen Veterinary Center or Regional Veterinary Service to schedule the surgery. We hope many will participate in this opportunity to reduce the pet population in this area.

On Sunday, Donna’s Pet Food Pantry will be distributing free dog and cat food for those needing temporary help feeding their pets. The summer hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the fi rst Sunday of each month at 1500 S. 29th. This is a ministry of the congregations of First Christian and First Presbyterian churches.

The next PALS rummage sale will be June 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at First Christian/First Presbyterian churches. Donations of sale items will be accepted at the church from noon to 6 p.m. on June 8.

PALS sincerely appreciates this community’s support. We love to give tours and our animals would love to have some extra attention. The kittens need to be socialized and the dogs would be so happy to have more supervisors for their big play yard. Come on out.
