Cooley is PALS Person of the Month

Posted Tuesday August 1, 2023

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. That makes the Proud Animal Lovers Shelter’s decision to hold its annual microchip/vaccination clinic in August even more appropriate.

This year’s event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the First Christian/First Presbyterian Churches, 1500 S. 29th. It will be a drive-thru clinic, so pets and owners will not have to stand in the hot sun as in previous years.

Low-cost immunizations will be available for dogs and cats. Dogs may receive rabies, parvo-distemper and bordetella vaccinations. Rabies and FVRCP vaccinations will be given to cats. The FVRCP vaccine protects cats from feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia, all highly contagious and life-threatening diseases.

Pet owners can have their dogs and cats microchipped and free city licenses will be available.

Dr. Mindy Mayfield of Dr. Mindy’s Veterinary Service at Columbus will be our veterinarian for the clinic, and we greatly appreciate her help in presenting this year’s event. We also want to thank the boards of First Christian/First Presbyterian Churches for allowing us to have our clinic in their parking lot.

If you brought your pets to last year’s clinic, it is time to update their vaccinations. This is especially important right now with parvo being so prevalent.

Details, including prices, are posted on Facebook and will be advertised in Friday’s Parsons Sun. We hope many will take advantage of this easy, low-cost way to keep their pets healthy.

PALS received a grant from Petfinder Foundation that covers the adoption fee, with an approved application, for the dogs and cats who have been at the shelter the longest. The grant only lasts until Oct. 24. We are so happy that finally some of our longest residents are now in forever homes.

Those adoptions are reflected in our monthly numbers. In July we took in four dogs but adopted out 13. We didn’t take in any cats, but eight are now in loving homes. Currently, we have 26 dogs and 15 cats who need families of their own.

The PALS board would like to honor Denny Cooley as our PALS Person of the Month. Denny has shared his carpentry skills with us, including helping put a roof on one of our outside kennels. When asked why he supports PALS, Denny said, “My mom asked me to help. I like animals, and I think PALS does a good job of taking care of them until they find a new home. And I just wanted to help them to be able to do that.” We are very grateful for Denny’s willingness to help, as well as his expertise in construction.

Several upcoming PALS events include our last rummage sale of the year on Sept. 8 and our annual soup fundraiser on Nov. 8. The Parsons Public Library will host Santa Paws again this year in November.

We thank the library for inviting our dogs to visit the children’s story hour again this summer. Several of those dogs have since been adopted.

As always, the board of PALS sincerely appreciates the support of Parsons and the surrounding area. Thank you to all who help our animals find loving homes.
